Fun articles about healthy home staging, redesign, color, and just simply living better.
As a home stager, I totally get it - small spaces can be a tough sell. Buyers want square footage. But with the right staging techniques, we can create the illusion of a larger space and make it more attractive to potential buyers. Today, I'll share some of my favorite tricks for staging a small space that feels bigger and more inviting. Let's get started!
Do: Use Mirrors
Mirrors are a great way to make a small space feel larger. They reflect light, making the space feel brighter and more open. Hang a large mirror on a wall or use a mirrored piece of furniture to create the illusion of more space. I love using mirrors on mantles and in entry ways to help buyers see themselves in the home.
Do: Use Light Colors
Light colors can make a space feel more open and airy, which is what buyers are looking for. Use light-colored paint on walls and choose light-colored furniture and accessories to help the space feel larger. Consider using a monochromatic color scheme to create a cohesive look and to keep the potential buyer's eyes moving. A large dark sofa in the middle of a light colored room will stop buyer's eyes, and make the room feel smaller.
Do: Use Multifunctional Furniture
In a small space, every square inch counts. Choose furniture that serves multiple functions, such as a storage ottoman or a bed with built-in storage. This will help you make the most of the space you have.
Do: Use Vertical Space
When you're working with a small space, it's important to use every inch of available space. Use vertical space by installing shelves or hanging artwork high on the walls. This will draw the eye upward and create the illusion of more space.
Don't: Use Oversized Furniture
In a small space, oversized furniture can quickly overwhelm the space. Choose furniture that is appropriately scaled for the room. Avoid bulky pieces that take up too much space.
Don't: Use Too Many Accessories
While accessories can add personality and style to a space, too many accessories in a small space can make it feel cluttered and cramped. Choose a few carefully curated pieces to add interest without overwhelming the space.
Don't: Use Heavy Window Coverings
Heavy window coverings can make a small space feel even smaller. Choose no window coverings at all, or light, airy curtains or shades that let in plenty of natural light. This will help the space feel brighter and more open.
So there you have it - follow these dos and don'ts, and you can stage a small space that feels super inviting and spacious. Even with limited space, a little creativity and attention to detail can go a long way in transforming your home into a cozy and functional space that potential buyers will fall in love with.
